Obligatory Royal Wedding Recap

No wedding planning blog is complete without a recap of the royal wedding – so here you are, my dears. 🙂

I, like many others, woke up bright and early to watch the British Royal Wedding. It was well worth the lack of sleep while working the next day – it was oh so fabulous and SO much fun to watch.

At first, it was hard to get past the fascination that many Americans have with the British culture – the accents, the polite demeanor and of course…the fascinators and hats!! The designer hats and perfect fascinators were SO much fun to see. With fascinators being a big trend in weddings lately, they were a welcomed sight to see everywhere.

And then there was Kate…

Timeless. Classic. Flawless.

With our first glimpse of her riding in her car, we saw her lace dress with sweetheart neckline underneath and we all gasped collectively. We knew it would be gorgeous – but we still had to wait till the car ride was over to see it in its entirety. Her hair and makeup were perfection – she had done them herself – and her beautiful tiara atop her loose waves was lent to her from the Queen. She wore beautiful drop earrings that were a gift from her parents and bore their family crest, carried a simple bouquet of flowers including “precious William” – awwww! Princess Kate seemed so genuinely happy, excited and nervous. She was made for that moment and we all couldn’t help but get butterflies in our stomach along with her as she approached the church. As she arrived at the church, she stepped out and we saw her full dress – in all of it’s glorious, lacy beauty. Full skirt, long train, lace – made for a princess. And she began her walk to her Prince.

Her sister, Pippa wore a stunning, figure-loving, white gown which surprised people as a “no-no” but ultimately was decided it was so chic, fresh and obviously…royal. 🙂

The ceremony was perfect, of course, and romantic. The couple seemed so giddy for each other – stealing little looks and giggles here and there. My favorite parts were the Harold trumpets and orchestra! The couple exchanged simple, gold bands, made their vows and took a private moment in an adjacent chamber to sign their marriage certificate. William and Kate kept their composure the entire time – amongst the nervousness and publicity – they never wavered or even cried!

After leaving the church, they – in true royal fashion – rode a carriage to the reception site where they would start the rest of their lives together.

The grandeur of the whole event was so enthralling to watch. Everything was so regal and every girl’s dream. Here, here to the Princess and Prince!

Wedding Wednesday – Nautical Theme

Ahoy, Mate!

I have a deep love for everything nautical. So fresh, clean, classic and just plain lovely. You really can’t deny it, amirite? And as much as I dream of living in the Northeast, with the ocean smell filling my being…I don’t. But you can have a nautical wedding no matter where you live! The keys to this theme are definitely the little elements that make it feel like you’re in Maine. But it’s also mucho important to make sure that you’re giving the correct ambiance of “nautical” through your venue(s), food and decor. Bon Voyage!

Let Them Eat Cake…Off of Pretty Stands!

Lovelies – I’m in love with this DIY project.

I’d seen it done before on blogs, but had never attempted it myself. Luckily, a friend wanted some help making some – so I finally got to witness the awesomeness first-hand. We made DIY cake stands!

My friend, the bride, is serving cupcakes at her reception, from a long table full of cake stands. A cupcake buffet, if you will. In addition to marking the different flavors of cupcakes with cute little pendant flags – she wanted a vintage feel with the stands. In order to achieve this look, she decided to DIY the stands by glueing candlestick holders, goblets and vases to the bottom of various plates in order to make the perfect variety of cake stands. Fabulous!

She found a bunch of these items at Goodwill and the Dollar Store – which really ups the “budget-friendly” rating and we worked to find the perfect pairings for weight distribution and prettiness. 🙂 She got some strong, industrial glue and we all went to work gluing.

After letting them dry for 72 hours, they’re perfect and ready for wedding cupcake-y goodness! Hoorah!

Wedding Themes Wednesday

It’s time to start a regular post that you can look forward to on a weekly basis – Wedding Themes Wednesday.

Now, don’t get me wrong – not every wedding has to have a theme. Don’t feel like just because your wedding isn’t completely centered on one key element that you’ve done it all wrong. TOTALLY fine! My wedding, for example, had no theme. *Gasp* I know right? I just chose colors, a feel and went with it and ended up with a black, white and green (Kate Spade green, to be specific :)) semi-formal springtime wedding. And it was fabulous.

Anyway – back to Wedding Themes Wednesday. Today we start with the ever popular…peacock theme wedding. Enjoy.

Friend Support

You guys know – our business primarily revolves around supporting brides. And that’s a good thing…there are a lot of brides our there and they want help (right? :)). It’s a good thing.

But today isn’t about helping brides. It’s about helping a friend. And by friend – I mean that person who has built an awesome brand that I didn’t have to look very far to find in the interwebs when I first got engaged before I even got engaged and have followed ever since. On Being a Bridesmaid

So you got asked to be a bridesmaid? Maybe for the first time, maybe for the tenth…

Remember – being asked to stand up in a wedding is a true honor. Let this statement rule all of your questions, thoughts, actions, etc. from the day you are asked to the day after the wedding.

Being a bridesmaid is definitely a task that demands a lot of a girl – so only accept if you’re up to the challenge!

Duties of a bridesmaid include being…

  • A sounding board, idea generator and shoulder to cry on to the bride.
    Engagements are when brides need their girlfriends the most. Try your hardest to be available and helpful when you can – trust me, you’ll want the same some day! Be her beacon of hope, oasis and best friend.
  • A busy-bee.
    As a bridesmaid, you take on the role of a wedding helper bee. Turn on your inner Martha Stewart in order to help the bride with whatever she needs – addressing invites, gluing placecard pieces, organizing response cards.
  • A pretty girlfriend
    Make sure you’re following directions and ancipating needs when it comes to your dress, jewelry, shoes, etc. for the big day. Be prepared to spend money on these things and make sure to communicate with the bride about ideas, decisions, shopping days and purchases. Nothing is worse than sending out an email to your five bridesmaids asking “Do you like these shoes or these shoes better?” and getting no responses. She’s trying to include you and make sure you like what you’re wearing!

The engagement period calls for bridesmaids to be there for showers, bachelorette party(ies), planning nights, setting up, etc, etc. Make sure you know what is expected of you when accepting a bridesmaid position and be communicative with the bride. This is an important day – and she wants you to be a part of it…LUCKY YOU!

Ways to be an extra awesome bridesmaid…

  • Put together an fter-wedding meal for the couple at the reception site to have sent up to their room.
  • Scout out accessories for the bridal party
  • Plan/cohost/pay for shower and bachelorette party
  • Help the couple with OOT giftbags for guests
  • Plan a pre-wedding jitter distraction event
  • Keep the bride’s cup full at the reception
  • Collect cameras/photos at end of night from guests
  • Prepare an “in case you forgot” traveling bag (camera, sunscreen, sunglasses, moisturizer, saline, toiletries) for the couple
  • Stock the couple’s kitchen with food for their return from their honeymoon

Attending a Wedding Show

Wedding shows can be one of the biggest resources to you during your wedding planning experience. If you know how to navigate the waters efficiently, they can turn a random Saturday afternoon into a productive wedding planning day. Don’t let those few hours slip by and be a waste of your parking ramp fees – use wedding shows to your advantage!

Top Three Things to Remember…

  1. Be Prepared.
    Have in your head (or even better – on a list!) what vendors you want to look for/talk to, what questions you have and what you’re looking to accomplish during the show.A wedding show can get overwhelming with all of the vendors there, all the things to look at, taste, etc. Make sure you have an agenda in mind so you can make the best use or your time – as well as the vendors who are there to work. Most shows have a website where you can check out which vendors are going to be there. Note those that you’re interested in in advance so you’re fully prepared for the room in front of you.

    A great tip to take advantage of is pre-printing some mail labels with your name, address, phone number, email and wedding date/location. These will come in handy in a super way when you want to give your name to vendors that you’re interested in as well as when you want to put your name in every drawing that vendors have at their booths. This way, you won’t waste time filling out entry form after entry form instead of just slapping the label on the piece of paper.

  2. Utilize your resources.
    Vendors participate in wedding shows in order to get business, obviously. And the primary reason for brides to attend is to connect with vendors in a sort of “speed dating” fashion in order to maybe book a few for their own wedding. However, if youw ant to really utilize the resource of a wedding show – look deeper than just vendors who you want to book.Vendors typically will have pictures of weddings they’ve worked in the past at their booth, or little vingettes of ideas for their service. Learn to look beyond the vendor and their direct service to glean ideas, inspiration and advice from their displays, pictures and comments to you. Go ahead and even ask questions – use the vendors as a resource and if you like them, contact them after and even book them! They want to help and gain your trust – whether for your wedding or for your referrals.
  3. Be the Client.
    Vendors are at theses shows to gain business. Period. Let them take the lead when it comes to following up after the show. Sure, give them your information – but then wait for them to get to you about following through. It takes the pressure off of you and lets them take the reigns. Don’t feel like you have to book aevery vendor you speak with – let them come after you.

Definitely go to a wedding show or two during your engagement – you never know what you can find there. Take a girlfriend or bridesmaid, have fun and enjoy the process!
